Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
